Wood veneer is a thin slice of real wood, usually under 1/32 inch (0.6mm) thick (but also available in different thicknesses), that is glued onto substrates like plywood, MDF, or particleboard to create panels that look like they’re made of solid wood. It highlights the natural beauty of wood grain while being more affordable and environmentally sustainable, since a single log can produce many veneer sheets.
A dyed veneer is a natural wood veneer that has been specially treated with color dyes to achieve uniform or vibrant shades while still retaining the natural wood grain. The veneer sheets are first bleached to remove much of the natural color variation in the wood. Then, they are immersed in dye baths that penetrate through the fibers, giving the entire thickness of the veneer a consistent color.
Just like solid wood, wood veneer color can change over time. Because veneer is real wood, it naturally reacts to light, air, and surrounding environment. These gradual changes are mainly influenced by factors such as sunlight (UV exposure) and oxidation (air exposure). Using UV-protective finishes can significantly reduce fading and help preserve the veneer’s appearance.
Veneer is applied by gluing a thin sheet of wood onto a stable base such as MDF, plywood, or particleboard. The surface of the base is prepared, and an adhesive is spread evenly before the veneer is carefully placed on top. Pressure is then applied, either with a cold press, hot press, or vacuum press, to bond the veneer securely. Once the glue has cured, the edges are trimmed, and the panel is sanded to complete the panel.
Veneer is a sustainable option because it maximizes the use of each tree. By slicing logs into thin sheets, a single log can cover a much larger area than solid wood, reducing waste and preserving valuable species. When sourced from certified forests, veneer combines natural beauty with efficiency and responsibility.
Yes, many of our products are FSC-certified and sourced from responsibly managed forests. We also offer materials that meet environmental standards such as CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI for low formaldehyde emissions, ensuring safer indoor air quality and sustainable use of resources. Plywood Express takes this responsibility very seriously and we are continuously audited to maintain these certifications.
All wood naturally contains some formaldehyde, but the difference lies in how much is present in the adhesives used to make panels like MDF, particleboard, or plywood. A product is considered a “green product” or California Phase 2 compliant when it meets strict limits on formaldehyde emissions. Panels made with NAF (No Added Formaldehyde) or ULEF (Ultra-Low Emitting Formaldehyde) adhesives qualify, ensuring safer indoor air and more sustainable materials.
Quartered cut veneer is sliced perpendicular to the tree’s growth rings, creating a straight, uniform grain. Plain sliced (or flat cut) veneer is cut parallel to the growth rings, producing a wider, cathedral-like grain pattern.

Veneer can be applied to stable, smooth, and rigid substrates such as MDF, plywood, particleboard. These materials provide the flatness and strength needed for proper bonding, while backed veneers (paper, wood, or phenolic) also allow application on curved or shaped surfaces.
Veneer is a thin slice of real wood bonded to a substrate, showcasing natural grain. Laminate is a printed surface made from paper and resin for durability, bonded to a phenolic core. TFL (Thermally Fused Laminate) is a melamine-impregnated paper fused directly onto a board, offering a cost-effective, durable finish with consistent patterns. Unlike laminate and TFL, veneer requires sanding and finishing, since it is real wood.
MDF Standard is denser (28-30 lb/ft³) and heavier, offering more strength for general use, while MDF Ultra Lite has a lower density (40–50 lb/ft³), making it lighter and easier to machine and to handle but slightly less strong with reduced screw-holding capacity.
Composite veneer is made from real wood but engineered for consistency, durability, and cost-effectiveness. It replicates the look of solid wood while offering greater affordability. Available in a wide variety of grains, colors, and styles.
The wood veneer surface is brushed using specialized wire sanding drums that remove the softer wood fibers and highlight the natural grain. Depending on the desired effect, different wire types (steel or brass) and brushing intensities are used to achieve textures ranging from light to deeply rustic.
We deliver materials using our trucks throughout most areas in Central, South, and West Florida. For locations outside these regions, we coordinate reliable nationwide shipping to ensure your order arrives wherever you are in the U.S. International shipping must be arranged by the customer.
We do not sell directly to homeowners, as our products are supplied exclusively to trade professionals such as architects, designers, contractors, and millworkers. However, homeowners are welcome to visit our showroom when accompanied by one of these professionals, allowing them to explore options and make decisions together.
Yes, we provide samples of all our materials. You can visit our showroom to select them in person, or we can ship samples directly to your address for convenience.
We keep a wide range of materials in stock for prompt shipment. Custom-made materials typically take between 4 days and 3 weeks, depending on the availability of raw materials.
Yes, you can arrange your own freight pickup. We’ll coordinate with your carrier to ensure the material is prepared and ready for collection at our facility.
We do not provide installation services. Our focus is on supplying quality materials, which are then installed by woodworkers.
We accept all major Credit Cards, Zelle, Wire Transfers, ACH, Checks, Cash, and Bitcoin.
Yes, we offer credit terms for repeat customers. To qualify, customers must complete a credit application, which is reviewed and approved under our credit insurance provider. Once approved, the insurer sets the credit limit available for purchases.
